Its total holdings now stand at 849,327 BTC. That stack is worth about $65.9 billion. Strategy paid roughly $64.1 billion for it, or an average of $75,451 per coin.
The holdings equal more than 4% of bitcoin’s total supply cap. Michael Saylor teased the buy on Sunday. He posted his tracker chart with the line, “We found room for even more orange.”
How Strategy Paid for the Bitcoin
The purchase came from at-the-market stock sales. Strategy sold 1,178,552 MSTR shares for about $164 million. Of that, $65.5 million went to bitcoin, and $98.5 million went to its USD cash account.
About $18.62 billion worth of stock remains available under that program. Strategy also bought back nearly 2.1 million STRC preferred shares. The price tag was about $208.2 million.
The company paid for the buyback from its USD cash reserve. It also used $43.4 million from its USD Reserve to fund preferred dividends. As of Nov. 1, the USD Reserve stood at $4.79 billion, and USD cash was $132.7 million.
Strategy says its dollar assets can cover dividend and interest payments for about 3.3 years. That is a long runway for a company with this much preferred stock outstanding.
Q3 Results and Leadership Change
On Thursday, Strategy posted $19.5 billion in third-quarter net income. That compares with $2.79 billion in the same quarter last year. A $20.9 billion gain on its bitcoin holdings drove the jump.
Software revenue fell 3% to $125.4 million. Strategy also reported a 3.7% negative bitcoin yield year to date.
Saylor said the company is at “the beginning of the next bitcoin bull market.” He cited bank adoption and returning institutional demand. He also said bitcoin trades 21% above its 200-week moving average.
Strategy said CFO Andrew Kang will step down on Nov. 5. COO Reza Virasteh will take over the role in January.
Earlier last week, holders of STRC, STRF, STRK and STRD preferred stock approved a dividend change. Dividends will now accrue daily instead of every two weeks. The measure got 99.3% of votes cast.
Analysts at StoneX and TD Cowen said Strategy is better placed to buy more bitcoin. They pointed to steadier preferred-stock financing and improved liquidity.
Strategy is the largest of 199 public companies with a bitcoin treasury. Metaplanet holds 44,000 BTC, Twenty One holds 43,514, Strive holds 43,000, and MARA holds 35,577.
Bitcoin fell 3.6% last week during a record $6.3 billion Binance hack. Saylor has said bitcoin could climb back above $100,000.
