TLDR
- China’s CXMT claims it has achieved the world’s first commercial deployment of LPDDR6 memory chips
- CXMT will supply LPDDR6 for Xiaomi’s 18 Fold foldable smartphone
- This marks the first time a Chinese memory company may have reached a cutting-edge standard ahead of Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix
- CXMT is also suing the Pentagon to be removed from a “Chinese military company” blacklist
- The Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) offers exposure to both Micron (25% weighting) and CXMT (4.95% weighting)
Micron Technology (MU) was up around 1% in premarket trading Friday, even as a Chinese rival made a move that caught the memory chip industry off guard.
ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced via social media that it has started mass production of LPDDR6 memory, the next generation of memory chips used in smartphones and other devices. The chips will debut in Xiaomi’s 18 Fold foldable smartphone.
LPDDR6 is a major step up from LPDDR5. It uses PAM3 signaling, which encodes more information per symbol, and pushes data transfer rates to 43.2 GT/s. The I/O width also drops from 32 bits to 24 bits, requiring changes at both the hardware and software level.
What makes this announcement stand out is the timing. CXMT has reached mass production of LPDDR6 at roughly the same time as the established industry leaders, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. That is a big shift.
In earlier generations, Chinese DRAM technology lagged well behind its international rivals. With LPDDR6, CXMT is entering the market during the standard’s initial commercialization window, not years after it.
A Gap That Is Closing Fast
CXMT’s rapid progress has been hard to ignore. The company recently went public, posted nearly tenfold revenue growth in its first earnings report as a listed company, and is now claiming a world first in LPDDR6 mass production.
The company is also pushing back against U.S. restrictions. CXMT is currently suing the Pentagon in an attempt to get itself removed from a blacklist that designates it as a “Chinese military company.”
CHINA’S CXMT BEGINS PRODUCING HBM3E MEMORY
China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies has started small-scale production of HBM3E, the advanced memory used in AI processors including NVIDIA’s H200 and Blackwell GPUs, according to The Information.

That said, the LPDDR6 announcement comes with caveats. CXMT has only confirmed supply for one smartphone model from one manufacturer. The chips still need to pass validation across other handsets and other makers before any broader conclusions can be drawn.
Producing memory at high yields and in volume for a wide market is a different challenge from a single niche launch. Whether CXMT can scale that is still an open question.
How Investors Can Play Both Sides
For Micron investors, this is worth watching but not necessarily cause for alarm. The current memory cycle is largely being driven by demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) in AI servers, not LPDDR chips.
Still, CXMT’s progress shows real ambition, and the competitive pressure is building.
One option for investors who want exposure across the memory chip sector is the Roundhill Memory ETF, which trades under the ticker DRAM. It holds a 25% weighting in Micron and a 4.95% weighting in CXMT, along with other memory names.
Micron’s larger weighting in the ETF reflects its stronger technology position and the uncertainty around whether CXMT may be required by Beijing to prioritize domestic customers over global ones.
CXMT’s LPDDR6 announcement currently covers only Xiaomi’s 18 Fold. Broader market validation is still ahead.
