Trump called Micron one of the “HOTTEST” companies in the world and said the move would keep America at the “absolute forefront of A.I. and Advanced Computing.”
MU stock ended Thursday’s regular session down 0.48% and extended losses in after-hours trading, falling 0.8% at the time of writing.
Trump also congratulated CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, calling him “fantastic,” and used the announcement to make a broader point about corporate investment under his administration.
“Because of our Great Policies, Companies are investing TRILLIONS,” Trump wrote.
Micron had actually announced the $10 billion research commitment the week before. The investment will be spread over the next decade and is aimed at tackling challenges in the memory supply chain.
The company plans to break ground next year on a flagship campus in Boise, Idaho, which is Micron’s hometown.
What Micron Research Labs Will Do
Micron Research Labs is designed to bring together academia, government, chip industry players, and customers under one roof.
The goal is to advance semiconductor architecture and manufacturing, two areas that are increasingly critical as AI infrastructure demand grows.
Trump pointed to the research investment as part of a larger picture. He referenced Micron’s earlier commitment, which the company announced in July when it raised its planned US investment to more than $250 billion through 2035.
That increase was driven by surging demand for AI memory chips, which Micron has been positioning itself to supply.
The $250 Billion Commitment
The $250 billion figure covers a range of planned domestic investments through 2035, including manufacturing and infrastructure.
Trump said that when combined with the new $10 billion research commitment, the total will create “over tens of thousands of Great American Jobs.”
He also framed the announcement as part of a wider trend, saying companies are investing “TRILLIONS” because of his administration’s policies.
Micron’s research campus in Boise is expected to break ground in 2027.
In July, Micron said the expanded $250 billion US investment plan was tied directly to rising AI memory demand, a market where the company has been competing hard against rivals.
