South Korea taps Google DeepMind for AI-led scientific innovation
Google DeepMind will establish its first AI Campus in South Korea under a new science and technology partnership. The deal supports Korea’s K-Moonshot programme and focuses on AI-led research, talent growth, and safety work. It links DeepMind’s global research strength with Korea’s industrial and academic ecosystem.
Google DeepMind Backs Korea’s K-Moonshot AI Push
Google DeepMind signed the agreement with South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT in Seoul. Demis Hassabis and Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon led the signing at the Four Seasons Hotel. The venue also hosted the historic AlphaGo match with Lee Sedol in 2016.
The agreement supports K-Moonshot, Korea’s national plan for AI-driven science and technology research. The programme targets major challenges in life sciences, weather, climate, robotics, and advanced energy. Google DeepMind will help Korea build stronger research systems around data, models, and talent.
Google DeepMind will work with local universities, research groups, startups, and major companies. The partnership may also involve Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai, and Boston Dynamics. Korean officials asked Google to send senior engineers for direct technical support.
First AI Campus Will Support Research and Talent
Google will build the AI Campus in Korea as a central hub for joint research. The site will connect engineers, scientists, students, startups, and public research teams. It will support model testing, AI training, and scientific tool development.
Google DeepMind and Korean institutions will focus on AI for scientific discovery. Their work will include drug research, bio-innovation, climate forecasting, and weather systems. Both sides will explore scientific data use and AI model verification.
The National Science AI Research Center will also support the partnership after its planned May opening. It will help coordinate researcher exchanges and joint projects under K-Moonshot. Google DeepMind will create internship paths for Korean AI researchers.
Partnership Adds Safety Work and Global Context
The agreement also includes AI safety research with Korea’s AI Safety Institute. Both sides will study safeguards, testing methods, and safety frameworks for advanced AI models. Google DeepMind will link technical development with responsible deployment standards.
The deal follows Google DeepMind’s major AI record in science and gaming. AlphaGo marked a turning point in AI after its 2016 match with Lee Sedol. Later, AlphaFold expanded DeepMind’s role by helping solve complex protein structure problems.
The partnership also arrives as Alphabet increases its broader AI investment push. Recent reports said Alphabet plans a major funding package for Anthropic. Still, Google DeepMind’s Korea project focuses on public research, scientific output, and long-term AI cooperation
