About 2 billion people worldwide use AI in 2026, up from 1.8 billion a year earlier, based on an estimate from Menlo Ventures. ChatGPT alone has 1.2 billion weekly users, according to OpenAI. In the United States, 49% of adults use AI chatbots and 24% use one every day, according to Pew Research Center.
The answer depends on what counts as using AI. A weekly chatbot habit, any AI tool used in the past six months and an AI summary at the top of a Google search all produce different totals.
This article pulls together the latest figures from surveys, government agencies and company reports. Each number is shown with its source, its date and what it measures.
AI Usage Statistics at a Glance
The table below lists the latest headline figure for each way of measuring AI use. The numbers differ because each source counts something different.
| What is counted | Number | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| People who use AI, worldwide (estimate) | About 2 billion | Menlo Ventures, 2026 |
| Working-age people worldwide using generative AI | 18.8% | Microsoft, June 2026 |
| ChatGPT weekly users | 1.2 billion | OpenAI, September 2026 |
| U.S. adults who use AI chatbots | 49% | Pew Research Center, February 2026 |
| U.S. adults who used AI in the past six months | 64% | Menlo Ventures, July 2026 |
| U.S. adults 18 to 64 who use generative AI | 61.8% | GenAI Adoption Tracker, May 2026 |
| U.S. employees who use AI in their job | 52% | Gallup, May 2026 |
| U.S. businesses that used AI in the past two weeks | 23.8% | U.S. Census Bureau, September 2026 |
| U.S. businesses paying for AI tools | 56.1% | Ramp AI Index, August 2026 |
| People aged 16 to 74 in the EU using generative AI | 32.7% | Eurostat, 2025 |
Worldwide, about 18.8% of working-age people use generative AI. The 2 billion figure is wider because it counts AI use in any form.
In the United States, the share of adults ranges from 49% to 64% depending on the question. Business figures also vary, with 23.8% of all U.S. businesses using AI in a two-week window and 56.1% of businesses on Ramp’s platform paying for an AI product.
How Many People Use AI Worldwide?
About 2 billion people used AI in 2026, roughly 24% of the world’s population. That is up 11% from 1.8 billion in 2025, according to Menlo Ventures.
The figure is a model, not a head count. Menlo builds it from a U.S. survey and adjusts for internet access, age and regional adoption.
Menlo is an investor in Anthropic.
Microsoft’s AI Economy Institute reports that 18.8% of the world’s working-age population, ages 15 to 64, used a generative AI product in June 2026. That compares with 17.8% in the first quarter and 16.3% in the second half of 2025.
Use reached 28.8% in the Global North and 16.2% in the Global South. The estimate comes from anonymized Microsoft data adjusted for device market share, internet access and population. Several widely used Chinese tools are not included yet, so the true share is likely higher.
Stanford’s 2026 AI Index says generative AI reached 53% population adoption within three years. That is faster than the personal computer or the internet. The report adds that the pace varies by country and tracks closely with GDP per capita.
An earlier study in World Development used website traffic data from March 2024. It found ChatGPT traffic in 209 of 218 economies within 16 months of launch. Middle-income economies made up over half of that traffic, while low-income economies made up less than 1%.
The same study found that users skewed young, highly educated and male. Only one-third of ChatGPT users were female in early 2024. By mid-2025, an OpenAI research paper found that 52% of users had typically feminine names.
The Biggest AI Products by Users
Google’s AI Overviews have the largest reach, at more than 2.5 billion monthly users as of May 2026. People see them inside Search results, so many never open a chatbot.
ChatGPT reports 1.2 billion weekly users as of September 29, 2026. Sensor Tower estimated more than 1.1 billion monthly users in May 2026.
| Product | Users | What is counted | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | More than 2.5 billion | Monthly actives | May 2026 |
| ChatGPT | 1.2 billion | Weekly users | Sept 2026 |
| Google AI Mode | More than 1 billion | Monthly actives | July 2026 |
| Gemini app | More than 1 billion | Monthly actives | Aug 2026 |
| Meta AI | More than 1 billion | Monthly actives across Meta apps | May 2025 |
| Microsoft AI features | 900 million | Monthly actives, all products | Oct 2025 |
| Claude | 245 million | Monthly users (Sensor Tower estimate) | May 2026 |
| Microsoft Copilot family | More than 150 million | Monthly actives | Oct 2025 |
| Grok | About 117 million | Monthly users of Grok’s AI features | March 2026 |
These numbers cannot be added together. One person can use ChatGPT, see AI Overviews and chat with Meta AI in the same week. OpenAI reports weekly users while most others report monthly users, which is always the larger number for the same product.
Anthropic has never published a Claude user count, so the 245 million figure is an outside estimate.
Traffic data shows the market spreading out. SimilarWeb found that ChatGPT held 56.72% of generative AI web traffic in March 2026, down from 77.43% in early 2025. Gemini rose from 6% to 25.46% over the same period.
Statista data on app downloads shows ChatGPT with 40.52% of downloads. DeepSeek followed at 17.59% and Google Gemini at 9.6%.
How Fast Is AI Use Growing?
ChatGPT reached 100 million weekly users in November 2023. By September 2026 it had 1.2 billion, a twelvefold rise in under three years.
| Date | ChatGPT weekly users |
|---|---|
| Nov 2023 | 100 million |
| Dec 2024 | 300 million |
| Feb 2025 | 400 million |
| Jul 2025 | 700 million |
| Oct 2025 | 800 million |
| Feb 2026 | More than 900 million |
| Aug 2026 | 1 billion |
| Sep 2026 | 1.2 billion |
The Gemini app grew from 400 million monthly users in May 2025 to more than 1 billion in August 2026. OpenAI research from July 2025 found 18 billion messages a week across 700 million weekly users. That works out to about 25.7 messages per user per week.
Every U.S. measure rose each year. Gallup found 27% of employees using AI at work in 2024, 40% in 2025 and 52% in 2026.
Ramp’s share of businesses paying for AI went from 34.2% to 45.0% to 56.1% over the same three Augusts.
Menlo’s survey shows where growth is now. The share of adults using AI moved only from 61% to 64% in a year, while daily use rose from 19% to 25%. The data suggests the habit is deepening faster than the user base is widening.
How Many Americans Use AI?
Between half and two-thirds of U.S. adults use AI, depending on the question. Pew found that 49% use AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, in a February 2026 survey of 5,119 adults.
In 2024, 33% said they had ever used one, though Pew changed the question wording between surveys.
About 24% of adults use a chatbot daily. That includes 8% about once a day, 12% several times a day and 4% almost constantly.
Menlo Ventures found that 64% of adults used AI in the past six months, up from 61% in 2025. By its own conversion, that is about 164 million adults. Menlo counts AI use across 41 everyday activities, which is why its figure runs higher than Pew’s chatbot question.
Menlo also found that 25% of adults use AI every day, up from 19% a year earlier. Among AI users, 55% pay for at least one AI product.
The GenAI Adoption Tracker found that 61.8% of Americans ages 18 to 64 used generative AI in May 2026, up from 44.6% in the third quarter of 2024. Economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Vanderbilt and Harvard run the tracker.
About seven in ten adults who do not use chatbots say they are unlikely to start soon. Six in ten cite lack of interest as a major reason, according to Pew.
AI Use by Age, Gender, Income and Race
Younger adults use AI chatbots the most, and use drops sharply after age 50. Adults under 50 are also the most likely to use a chatbot every day.
| Age | Use AI chatbots | Use a chatbot daily | Use ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 to 29 | 66% | 31% | 61% |
| 30 to 49 | 61% | 34% | 55% |
| 50 to 64 | 42% | 19% | 37% |
| 65 and older | 23% | 7% | 19% |
| All U.S. adults | 49% | 24% | 44% |
Menlo found that 81% of Gen Z adults use AI, the highest of any generation. Millennials lead daily use at 37%. Among parents, 84% use AI, compared with 56% of adults without children.
The gender gap has narrowed. Pew found that 50% of men and 47% of women use chatbots, compared with 39% and 28% in 2024. Men are still more likely to use them daily, at 27% against 20%.
Income and race show wider gaps. Chatbot use is 66% among upper-income adults, 49% among middle-income adults and 41% among lower-income adults.
By race, 70% of Asian adults use chatbots, compared with 49% of Hispanic adults, 49% of Black adults and 46% of White adults. Pew’s Asian American estimates cover English speakers only.
In a February 2025 Pew survey, 52% of adults with a postgraduate degree and 51% with a bachelor’s degree had used ChatGPT. That compares with 33% of those with some college and 18% with a high school diploma or less.
How Many People Use AI at Work?
Gallup found that 52% of U.S. employees use AI in their job at least a few times a year. About 30% use it a few times a week or more, and 15% use it daily.
The survey covered 22,573 employed adults in May 2026.
Daily use is 42% in technology jobs, 27% in finance and 22% in professional services. Among workers who use AI, 51% use it for writing and editing, 49% for search or research and 39% for general problem-solving.
| Measure (U.S.) | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employees using AI at work (Gallup) | 27% | 40% | 52% |
| Employees using AI daily (Gallup) | 4% | 8% | 15% |
| Adults 18 to 64 using generative AI (Tracker) | 44.6% | 54.5% | 61.8% |
Other surveys give lower numbers because they ask stricter questions. Pew found that 38% of employed adults use chatbots for work tasks. On a stricter question, 21% said at least some of their work is done with AI, up from 16% a year earlier.
Statistics Canada released its first results on worker AI use in July 2026. In March 2026, 35.9% of Canadian workers used generative AI at work in the past 12 months. Use was highest in professional, scientific and technical services at 65.6%, and lowest in accommodation and food services at 16.3%.
Among Canadian users, 31.4% use AI daily and 38.3% use it a few times a week. Most use it for some tasks but not most. Only 11.6% use it for most or nearly all tasks.
Among non-users, 56.0% said generative AI was not applicable to their work. Another 21.6% said they had no interest.
How Many Businesses Use AI?
The U.S. Census Bureau found that 23.8% of U.S. businesses used AI in any business function from August 24 to September 6, 2026. Another 27.6% expect to within six months.
The same question read 17.3% in November 2025.
Ramp found that 56.1% of U.S. businesses paid for an AI product in August 2026. That is up from 45.0% a year earlier and 7.5% in January 2023.
The Census figure is lower because it samples all U.S. employer businesses, most of them very small. Ramp counts only businesses on its own platform, and a single AI purchase qualifies.
| Measure | Result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. businesses using AI, two-week window | 23.8% | Census Bureau, Sept 2026 |
| U.S. businesses paying for AI | 56.1% | Ramp, Aug 2026 |
| EU enterprises using AI, 2025 | 19.95% | Eurostat via Pause Media |
| Large EU enterprises / small EU enterprises | 55% / 17% | Eurostat via Pause Media |
| Organizations using AI in at least one function | 88% | McKinsey, 2025 |
| Organizations still piloting or experimenting | 62% | McKinsey, 2025 |
| Organizations that have fully scaled AI | About 7% | McKinsey, 2025 |
Large organizations report heavy use, but depth is thin. McKinsey data cited in the sources shows 88% of organizations use AI in at least one function. Only about 7% have scaled it across the whole company.
How Many Teens and Students Use AI?
Pew found that 64% of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 use AI chatbots, and about three in ten use them daily. The survey covered 1,458 teens in fall 2025.
In a February 2026 Pew report, 54% of teens used chatbots for help with schoolwork and 57% used them to search for information.
Stanford’s 2026 AI Index says more than 80% of U.S. high school and college students use AI for school tasks. Only half of middle and high schools have AI policies, and just 6% of teachers say those policies are clear.
In the United Kingdom, 95% of full-time undergraduates use AI in some form, according to a December 2025 survey of 1,054 students by HEPI and Kortext. About 94% use generative AI to support assessed work. The share who put AI-generated text directly into assessed work rose to 12% from 3% in 2024.
Which Countries Use AI the Most?
The United Arab Emirates leads, with 73.3% of its working-age population using generative AI in June 2026. Singapore follows at 64.3%. The United States ranks 21st at 33.0%.
| Rank | Country | Working-age population using generative AI |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | United Arab Emirates | 73.3% |
| 2 | Singapore | 64.3% |
| 3 | Ireland | 49.9% |
| 4 | France | 49.6% |
| 5 | Norway | 49.4% |
| 6 | Spain | 45.1% |
| 7 | New Zealand | 44.1% |
| 8 | United Kingdom | 43.7% |
| 9 | Netherlands | 43.5% |
| 10 | Qatar | 43.5% |
| 21 | United States | 33.0% |
Germany is at 32.3%, Japan at 24.7%, Brazil at 20.2%, India at 18.5% and China at 17.5%. The Chinese figure is understated because several widely used Chinese tools are not measured. South Korea gained the most of any top-25 economy, up 3.5 points to 40.6%.
Earlier data put the United States at 24th with 28.3% at the end of 2025. India has 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, the first country outside the U.S. to reach that level.
Eurostat found that 32.7% of people aged 16 to 74 in the EU used generative AI tools in 2025. Most used them for personal purposes at 25.1%, while 15.1% used them for work and 9.4% for formal education.
Use was highest in Denmark at 48.4%, Estonia at 46.6% and Malta at 46.5%. It was lowest in Romania at 17.8%, Italy at 19.9% and Bulgaria at 22.5%.
The Anthropic Economic Index measures Claude use against population size. Israel scored highest at about 7 times the usage its working-age population would predict, followed by Singapore at 4.57 and Australia at 4.10. That index covers Claude only.
Trust, Concerns and the Limits of the Numbers
Use is growing faster than trust. Stanford’s AI Index found that 73% of experts expect AI to have a positive effect on how people do their jobs, compared with 23% of the public. That is a 50-point gap.
Trust in government oversight also varies. Among countries surveyed, the United States reported the lowest trust in its own government to regulate AI, at 31%.
In business, 51% of organizations report negative effects from AI use. Inaccuracy is the top concern at 56%, followed by cybersecurity at 53% and intellectual property issues at 46%.
Several popular numbers do not hold up. A claim that 378 million people use AI tools traces to a paywalled market forecast, not a measured count. A claim that Gemini has 2.5 billion users mixes up the Gemini app, which passed 1 billion monthly users in August 2026, with AI Overviews in Search.
Another claim that 35% of businesses use AI comes from IBM’s 2022 survey, not current data. Use the date and sample behind each figure before quoting it.
Conclusion
AI use has grown quickly, but the totals depend on who is counting and what they count. About 2 billion people use AI worldwide by one estimate, while 18.8% of working-age people use generative AI by another.
In the United States, the share of adults using AI sits between 49% and 64%. Daily use, workplace use and business spending are all rising, while concerns about accuracy and trust remain.
