Johnson & Johnson stock climbed around 1.7% on Tuesday after the FDA granted De Novo authorization for its OTTAVA Robotic Surgical System.
The clearance opens the door for J&J to enter the soft-tissue robotic surgery market â a space it has long watched from the sidelines.
OTTAVA is approved for general surgery procedures in the upper abdomen. That includes gastric bypass, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, splenectomy, and hernia repair.
J&J submitted the device to the FDA in January 2026, following a structured investigational device exemption clinical study. The path from submission to clearance took just over six months.
The company says it will move forward with a U.S. commercial launch now that the authorization is in hand. It also plans to pursue regulatory approval in other global markets.
One of OTTAVA’s standout features is its table-integrated architecture. The robotic arms are built directly into the operating table, which means the system takes up 30â50% less space than traditional boom- and cart-mounted robotic systems.
That design could appeal to hospitals with smaller operating rooms that have not been able to run robotic surgery programs until now.
Entering a Competitive Market
The robotic surgery space is well established and has a dominant player: Intuitive Surgical and its da Vinci system. Medtronic’s Hugo robot is also in the mix. J&J is now stepping into that competition directly with OTTAVA.
It’s a meaningful move for J&J’s MedTech division, which has been growing as the company diversifies beyond its pharmaceutical business.
The FDA approval follows a strong Q2 2026 earnings report from J&J. The company posted worldwide sales of $25.3 billion, up 6.6% year over year. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.90, beating the consensus estimate of $2.85.
Management also raised full-year adjusted EPS guidance and lifted its sales forecast following those results.
Analyst Outlook
Wall Street is broadly positive on JNJ. Seventeen analysts currently cover the stock, with 13 Buy ratings and four Holds. The consensus rating is Strong Buy.
The average price target sits at $279.19, which implies roughly 10% upside from current levels.
Tuesday’s move came against a mixed broader market. The Dow edged up 0.4%, the S&P 500 was nearly flat, and the Nasdaq dipped modestly. JNJ’s gains were driven by its own news, not the tape.
An EVP-level insider transaction filed via Form 4 on July 21 â an options exercise followed by a sale â was flagged by some data feeds but was routine in nature and did not raise investor concern.
The FDA clearance is the most recent catalyst for the stock as of Tuesday morning trading.
