Vaccine and biodefense stocks moved higher this week after a lab worker in Russia died from an illness suspected to be linked to plague exposure. The worker was a 28-year-old technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia.

She developed pneumonia of unknown origin after reported exposure on September 25. She later died, and authorities placed close to 200 contacts under medical observation.
Regional governor Igor Kobzev said those under monitoring showed no symptoms and tested negative. Russia’s health agency, Rospotrebnadzor, said samples did not contain microorganisms tied to her job duties.
Stocks React To Outbreak Fears
The news sent several healthcare stocks higher during Monday’s regular trading session. Novavax surged 20%, while Moderna gained close to 7%.
Emergent BioSolutions rose 14%, and Arcturus Therapeutics climbed 13%. The rally extended beyond vaccine makers into companies tied to protective equipment and antiviral treatments.
Lakeland Industries, which makes protective clothing, gained 15%. Alpha Pro Tech, a maker of masks and face shields, rose 13%.
NanoViricides, an antiviral drug developer, also climbed 13%. Virax Biolabs, which focuses on immune-response detection, advanced 10%. Siga Technologies, which supplies a smallpox antiviral to the U.S. government stockpile, added 3%.
President Trump commented on the situation Monday, calling it a “big problem for Russia” and saying the U.S. would help, according to Reuters. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the situation as a “cause for focus.”
The World Health Organization said the risk to the general public appeared low based on available information. Russian officials described the regional situation as stable.
Vaxcyte Raises $1 Billion Alongside Sector Gains
Vaxcyte had its own catalyst during the rally. The company gained over 30% in Monday’s regular session.
The company announced a $1 billion capital raise. This includes $500 million in common stock and pre-funded warrants, along with $500 million in convertible notes due 2032.
Vaxcyte said the funds will support trials of its pneumococcal vaccine candidate, VAX-31. The money will also go toward manufacturing scale-up and preparations for a U.S. launch.
Vaxcyte shares fell 4.36% in after-hours trading on Monday, slipping from the regular session’s gains.
None of the companies involved in the rally currently sell a vaccine or treatment for plague. Novavax’s main product is a protein-based COVID-19 vaccine. Moderna sells COVID-19 and RSV vaccines using mRNA technology.
Arcturus has a commercial COVID-19 vaccine and is developing an experimental flu vaccine funded in part by a U.S. government health agency. Emergent BioSolutions makes vaccines and treatments for anthrax and smallpox, which are part of the U.S. national medical stockpile.
By Tuesday morning, Novavax and Moderna showed more stable trading in premarket hours. The WHO’s report on the lab worker’s death continued to be the primary driver of investor attention in the sector as of the latest trading session.
