Among the first data published were identity documents and selfies linked to tennis player Alexander Shevchenko and Felix Römer, CEO of online crypto casino Gamdom, according to a post on X from International Cyber Digest.
The exposed information includes full names, dates of birth, occupations, contact details, account statements, and full transaction histories. That includes records of Bitcoin transactions.
Passport copies and driver’s licenses were also part of the compromised data, according to a report from TechCrunch.
How the Breach Happened
Revolut said the leak was the result of a “sophisticated external impersonation scam.” An attacker used an email address from a legitimate government agency domain to submit fraudulent data requests.
The company said it detected the breach, immediately blocked the address, and alerted the relevant government agency, enforcement agencies, data protection, and financial regulators.
Revolut confirmed the breach affected a “very limited” number of customers, who have been individually notified.
The company has not disclosed the exact number of people affected.
Risks for Affected Customers
Security experts note that exposed identity documents and facial-verification images raise the risk of identity theft for those affected.
Customers whose Bitcoin transaction histories were exposed could also face additional privacy concerns.
Revolut stressed that its systems and customer funds were not accessed or compromised.
The company operates without physical bank branches and is one of Europe’s most successful fintech firms.
Revolut is currently planning for a potential public listing and is targeting a valuation of up to $200 billion.
The timing of the breach is awkward for the company as it prepares for that major financial milestone.
Revolut has not publicly confirmed whether it plans to comply with the attackers’ demands or what additional steps it is taking to prevent further leaks.
The situation remains active, with attackers threatening continued daily data releases until their demands are met.
