The Tesla Roadster is back in the headlines. Again.
Elon Musk responded to a video clip from his Joe Rogan Experience appearance last year, agreeing that the upcoming Roadster unveiling event will be “unforgettable.” That’s a strong word for a car that was first shown to the world back in 2017.

Tesla design chief Franz von Holzhausen told Jay Leno this week that the unveiling would happen “very soon.” No date was given.
Tesla VP of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy said last July that the Roadster is “definitely in development” and that the team had shown Musk some tech demos that got him “a little excited.” Moravy described the upcoming demo as “mind blowing.”
The car had been penciled in for an April 2026 unveiling. That date came and went. It was then pushed to August. No event has been announced.
A Decade of Delays
Tesla first unveiled the second-generation Roadster in 2017. Nearly ten years later, it has not entered production.

In early 2024, Musk said the first units would be delivered in the first half of 2025. That did not happen.
The promised specs remain eye-catching. Tesla has targeted a 0-100 km/h time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed above 400 km/h, a range of close to 1,000 kilometers, and a starting price of around 173,000 euros.
For years, Tesla has also hinted at an optional SpaceX cold gas thruster package that could allow the car to briefly hover or float. Just yesterday, Musk said flying cars are coming, keeping that angle of speculation alive.
What We Actually Know
The most recent on-record update from inside Tesla came from Moravy in July 2025. He confirmed development is active and that a demo is being prepared.
Von Holzhausen’s comments to Jay Leno this week are the freshest public signal, though “very soon” is doing a lot of heavy lifting with no timeline attached.
Fan frustration is growing. The Roadster has become something of a running joke in automotive circles, a car that is always almost ready.
There is no confirmed unveiling date as of August 14, 2026.
