Thiel Macro Reveals $76 Million Vista Energy Stake
Thiel Macro LLC owned nearly 1.2 million Vista Energy American Depositary Shares at the end of June. The position carried a value of about $76 million, according to a regulatory filing published Friday. Consequently, Vista became one of the hedge fund’s largest disclosed holdings during the second quarter.
The Vista Energy position ranked behind only Thiel Macro’s holding in Amazon during the reporting period. The fund owned 495,000 Amazon shares worth approximately $118 million at the quarter’s end. Therefore, Vista represented a significant part of the fund’s disclosed public equity portfolio.
Thiel Macro also added several companies connected to electricity generation, utilities, and energy infrastructure. Those positions included American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy, Vistra, and X-Energy. Overall, six of the fund’s seven newly disclosed positions came from energy-related businesses.
Vista Energy Expands Its Vaca Muerta Operations
Vista Energy operates as Argentina’s largest independent energy company and focuses heavily on shale oil production. The company develops resources in Vaca Muerta, one of the country’s most important unconventional energy regions. Its operations have expanded as Argentina seeks greater oil production and international energy exports.
Vista has invested more than $6.5 billion in Argentina while expanding its production capacity and infrastructure. The company has used Vaca Muerta’s large shale resources to strengthen its position within Argentina’s oil industry. Meanwhile, improved operating conditions have increased attention on companies exposed to the country’s energy sector.
President Javier Milei’s government has pushed economic reforms designed to increase foreign capital across several industries. Energy remains central to that strategy because Argentina holds significant oil, natural gas, lithium, and mineral resources. These policies provide important background for Vista Energy’s growing profile among international asset managers.
Peter Thiel Builds Stronger Links With Argentina
Thiel moved with his family to Buenos Aires earlier this year after relocating from the United States. Since arriving in April, he has established closer connections with senior figures inside Milei’s administration. His Vista Energy position now adds a major financial link to Argentina’s expanding energy industry.
Thiel has met Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Deregulation Minister Federico Sturzenegger since relocating to Argentina. He has also met presidential adviser Santiago Caputo as Milei advances changes across Argentina’s economy. Earlier this year, Thiel also held discussions with Milei during the government’s push for foreign investment.
Vista Energy stock gained 5.67% to $72.18 following the disclosure, extending strong intraday momentum. The $76 million position places the oil producer among Thiel Macro’s most significant reported equity holdings. The filing also reinforces the fund’s broader move toward energy and power companies.
