3M (MMM) and Airbus have signed a long-term supply agreement covering thermal and acoustic insulation solutions for the Airbus A220. MMM stock was trading up 1.63% on the news, while Airbus shares gained 0.83%.
Under the deal, 3M will provide two types of insulation materials for the A220 cabin. The thermal insulation is designed to support the aircraft’s operational performance, while the acoustic insulation will be integrated throughout the cabin to reduce engine and airframe noise.
The agreement is an extension of an existing relationship between 3M and Airbus. 3M says that collaboration already spans a broader range of aerospace materials and technologies beyond the A220 program.
Financial terms were not disclosed by either company.
Eric Forbes, Vice President of Aerospace and Defense at 3M, commented on the deal: “Our long-term agreement with Airbus reflects the value of deep collaboration in bringing advanced materials science to the future of aviation.”
Forbes added: “Together, we are helping enhance both comfort and performance through technologies that passengers can feel directly in the cabin and that airlines can rely on across the life of the aircraft.”
What the Deal Covers
The acoustic insulation materials will be installed throughout the A220 cabin. The goal is to reduce the noise passengers and crew experience from both the engine and the airframe during flight.
The thermal insulation component is focused on the operational side. It is expected to contribute to aircraft efficiency over the life of the program.
3M said it expects to continue working with Airbus on future innovation projects beyond the A220 specifically.
About the A220
The A220 is a narrow-body commercial aircraft originally developed by Bombardier as the C Series before Airbus took a majority stake in the program in 2018. It seats between 100 and 150 passengers depending on configuration and competes in the single-aisle regional jet market.
For 3M, the aerospace and defense segment is one of several industrial divisions within the company. The A220 supply agreement adds a long-term revenue stream tied to Airbus production volumes for that aircraft.
3M did not provide details on contract length, volume commitments, or expected revenue from the deal.
The announcement came on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Both companies framed the agreement as a reflection of their shared focus on advancing passenger comfort and aircraft performance through materials innovation.
3M stated the deal builds on its longstanding relationship with Airbus, which covers a range of aerospace materials and technologies across multiple programs.
