OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026, calling it its most capable and aligned AI model to date. The launch quickly drew attention from across the tech world, including from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
Huang posted on X on September 7, writing “AGI has arrived” and congratulating the OpenAI team. He pointed to Astra’s training infrastructure as proof of how far AI development has come.

Astra was trained on more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems. Huang noted that another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs are set to come online, signaling more large-scale AI builds ahead.
OpenAI described Astra as its most intelligent and aligned system yet. The company says it leads on benchmarks across computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional tasks.
The model scored 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3. It also achieved a perfect 100% on ExploitBench.
What Astra Can Do
Astra is built to handle longer and more complex tasks than previous models. It can operate a computer on a user’s behalf with less human input, covering areas like software engineering and professional work.
Its cybersecurity capabilities are drawing particular attention. OpenAI says Astra has reached its internal “Critical” cybersecurity threshold, meaning it can find previously unknown software vulnerabilities and develop ways to exploit them without step-by-step guidance.
Because of this, OpenAI has added extra safeguards and limited access to some of Astra’s capabilities at launch.
Not Everyone Agrees on AGI
Huang’s declaration was not accepted by everyone. OpenAI President Greg Brockman said Astra could represent the beginning of the AGI era, but stopped short of confirming the company had officially reached AGI.
AI critic Gary Marcus also pushed back on Huang’s claim. Marcus pointed out there is no universally agreed-upon definition of AGI, and no clear evidence that current systems have crossed that line.
The debate around what counts as AGI has been ongoing in the AI research community for years, and Astra’s launch has brought it back into public focus.
Nvidia shares have gained 23.7% year-to-date. Analysts on TipRanks give Nvidia a Strong Buy consensus rating, based on 29 Buy ratings.
The average analyst price target for Nvidia sits at $325.23, implying upside of 41.2% from current levels.
For Nvidia, the scale of Astra’s training run underlines strong and growing demand for its AI chips. The announcement of 400,000 more GPUs coming online adds to expectations for continued chip demand through the rest of 2026.
