Accenture (ACN) stock dropped 3% and Alphabet (GOOGL) fell 1% in early Tuesday trading after the two companies announced a new joint business unit focused on deploying AI engineers directly inside client organisations.
The new group is called the Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group. It will bring together Accenture’s Gemini Enterprise-certified professionals, specialised Google Cloud engineers, and Accenture’s industry experts.
The goal is to help companies get real, measurable results from agentic AI, not just pilot projects that go nowhere.
At the heart of the unit are forward-deployed engineers, or FDEs. These are technical experts who embed directly inside a client’s business to plan, build, and launch AI applications on the ground.
Google Cloud will help train up to 1,000 of these FDEs. A smaller group of Google Cloud’s own FDEs will work with top-tier clients on a limited basis.
Accenture CEO Julie Sweet put it plainly: “AI is simple to try and hard to scale, and that’s the moment leaders are in right now.”
A Crowded But Familiar Playbook
The FDE model was made popular by Palantir, and it has since been picked up across the industry. OpenAI launched its own services unit called OpenAI Deployment Co. earlier this year. Anthropic has its Applied AI team. Microsoft and Amazon Web Services have both made similar moves in recent months.
Accenture and Google are essentially joining a race that is already well underway.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said companies struggle not just with building AI tools, but with understanding how their entire business processes need to change as a result.
“There’s a need for experts who can go and do these things for customers,” Kurian said.
How the Unit Actually Works
In practice, Accenture deploys “pods” into organisations. Each pod includes FDEs who build solutions, alongside industry, process, and data experts.
One client example: a pod was brought in to automate invoice processing. Over eight to twelve weeks, the team mapped the process, integrated company data, and built a scalable agentic AI solution, complete with a road map for rolling it out company-wide.
Once the FDE team finishes, other Accenture staff take over to handle the broader rollout.
Accenture already had around 50,000 Google Cloud-skilled professionals before this announcement. The new unit adds another layer of specialised, certified expertise on top of that existing base.
Sweet said Accenture’s deep experience working inside large organisations is actually a competitive edge here: “You have to know how you actually deploy a system in a big company.”
Accenture and Google Cloud confirmed the new group represents a material investment but declined to share specific financial details.
Both ACN and GOOGL stocks were trading lower on Tuesday morning following the announcement.
