The war, which began in February when the US and Israel attacked Iran, is now in its seventh month. Trump originally said it would last only weeks.
Speaking to reporters, Trump predicted the conflict would end “immediately after the election” in November, arguing that Iran’s leaders “can’t hold out any longer.” He also said oil prices would “tumble downward” after the midterms.
The war has pushed energy prices sharply higher. Brent crude hit $100 a barrel on Wednesday for the first time since July. US diesel prices also hit an all-time high this week.
Higher fuel costs have pushed up prices on goods across the country. Some analysts predict the rising costs could also push interest rates higher.
Trump acknowledged some of his own supporters are unhappy. At the convention, he said: “Guys come up to me and say, ‘I wish you didn’t do the war in Iran. Now gasoline is up.'” He did not express concern about this.
The core US position remains that Iran cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has denied seeking nuclear weapons and says its program is peaceful.
Escalating Attacks in the Region
Fighting has intensified in recent days. On Tuesday, the US military destroyed five oil tankers linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Gulf of Oman.
Iran’s IRGC said it attacked two US Navy destroyers and eight oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command denied its warships were hit.
Iran also launched ballistic missiles at a US air base in Jordan. Jordan intercepted 20 missiles, but sources told CBS News that several US fighter jets were damaged, including one A-10 and around eight F-15s.
Explosions were reported in southern Iran Wednesday night. Iranian officials said the sounds came from the sea and denied they were US strikes.
Political Pressure Mounts
Trump’s approval ratings have dropped as the war drags on. Pressure is growing from within his own party to end the conflict quickly.
Republicans are at risk of losing control of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections. Historically, the president’s party loses seats in midterm votes.
