Tesla posted a “Go for launch” teaser on X, with Musk following up with: “New Tesla Roadster Unveil 10.01.” The announcement drew immediate attention from fans and investors who have been waiting since the 2017 prototype debut.
TSLA stock was down 1.7% in premarket trading on Monday following the news.
SpaceX Connection Takes Center Stage
The event is expected to be held at SpaceX’s test facility in McGregor, Texas. That location alone has stirred speculation about what the reveal could look like.
The most anticipated feature is a possible demonstration of SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters. These use pressurized gas to create short bursts of force rather than combustion rockets. The system could briefly lift or hover the car, potentially in an unmanned demo.
A limited Roadster version may include thrusters designed to improve acceleration, braking, and cornering. Tesla has not confirmed final pricing, production timelines, or delivery dates.
Tesla’s previous performance targets for the car were aggressive: 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, a top speed above 250 mph, and around 620 miles of range from a roughly 200 kWh battery pack.
What Else to Expect
Beyond the thrusters, Tesla may use the event to show a more production-ready version of the car. Expect updates on specs including acceleration, top speed, range, and track performance.
The Information reported in August that Tesla had redesigned the Roadster as an all-new carbon-fiber hypercar, dropping an earlier plan that used Model S Plaid parts.
The reveal lands during a busy stretch for Tesla. A Semi event is planned for September 24, with the electric truck set to reach Europe in 2027. Tesla has also started limited driverless Cybercab rides in Austin.
The original Roadster ran from 2008 to 2012 and produced around 2,450 units. It was built on a modified Lotus Elise chassis and is credited as an early proof that EVs could deliver real-world range and performance.
The second-generation version has been delayed at least eight times since its 2017 prototype reveal.
Wall Street currently rates TSLA a Moderate Buy, based on 11 Buys, 12 Holds, and three Sells over the past three months. The average price target sits at $377.08, implying 3% upside from current levels.
