Elon Musk announced on September 14 that Grok 5, the next flagship model from his AI company xAI, is the version he expects to achieve artificial general intelligence, or AGI.
Musk made the claim in two posts on X, triggering debate among researchers and market traders.

AGI refers to AI systems that can match or exceed human performance across a wide range of tasks, rather than being built for one specific job.
What Musk Said About the Grok Roadmap
Earlier on September 14, Musk confirmed that Grok 4.8 would finish basic training within the week. The model uses 2.5 trillion parameters and runs on a new C++ software stack developed by xAI.
After training wraps, Grok 4.8 will move into reinforcement learning, a process that helps models improve through feedback and iteration.
When a user asked how close Grok 4.8 would come to AGI, Musk replied simply: “That will be Grok 5.”
He then laid out a clearer roadmap. Grok 4.7 performs roughly on par with Anthropic’s Opus 5, stronger in some areas and weaker in others. Grok 4.9 would aim for Astra or Fable-level performance. On Grok 5, Musk wrote: “Maybe better than anything. We shall see.”
xAI has scaled quickly by combining large compute clusters with real-time data from X and engineering knowledge drawn from SpaceX.
AGI Warnings and the Market Reaction
Musk’s AGI comments came the same day he publicly supported a call from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to slow the pace of AI capability development.
That combination drew attention. Musk is racing toward AGI while also backing warnings about its dangers.
Safety concerns raised by AI leaders sent chip stocks lower on the day. Nvidia fell 3.46% and AMD dropped 6.24% as traders worried about slower demand for AI hardware.
The risks analysts point to include AI systems pursuing goals that conflict with human values, concentration of power among a small number of companies, and capability jumps that are hard to predict or control.
Musk has previously argued that powerful AI could expand global economic output within a few years, speeding up work in software, robotics, and scientific research.
Whether Grok 5 delivers on the AGI promise remains uncertain. xAI has closed performance gaps with established labs quickly, but matching or beating human-level performance across all tasks would be a first for any AI company.
Grok 4.8 is expected to complete its training phase and enter reinforcement learning by the end of this week.
