Elon Musk is calling for the world’s top artificial intelligence companies to test each other’s models before releasing them to the public. Speaking at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles on Monday, the SpaceX CEO said companies including his own xAI unit, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and several leading Chinese firms should allow competitors to run safety checks on their models.
“Instead of grading your own homework, you would at least have competitors grading your homework and raising the alarm if they see concerns,” Musk said.
Elon Musk just said the quiet part out loud about closed AI labs.
At the All-In Summit, he called for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and several Chinese labs to safety-test each other's models.

The proposal is a form of industry self-regulation, where rivals would flag safety issues before a model goes live. Musk admitted the approach is not perfect but said it would increase the chances of catching problems.
AI Leaders Warn of Dangers
The comments came after a weekend of warnings from top AI executives. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay calling for a slowdown in model development. Both Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backed the proposal, which was seen as a rare moment of agreement between the three executives.
The debate had already been heating up before the weekend. Last week, Jacob Coxon, a former employee at both Anthropic and OpenAI, announced he had quit his job. In a public post, Coxon said leading AI labs are “gambling with our lives.”
Evan Hubinger, an alignment researcher at Anthropic, backed Coxon’s statements. Hubinger wrote that he personally believes there is more than a 10% chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade.
Amodei’s essay suggested a different path from Musk’s proposal. He called for third-party “embedded evaluators” who would independently verify safety practices at AI labs. Musk acknowledged that rival labs have not yet agreed to his peer-review idea.
Trump Rejects Regulation Calls
President Donald Trump pushed back hard on calls for AI limits. He posted on Truth Social on Monday, calling fears about AI a “hoax” and a “scam.”
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNBC on Tuesday that the private sector is the right place to handle AI concerns. He said the government is watching the industry and will use law enforcement if needed.
Trump has also argued that slowing AI development would give China an advantage. Amodei called that the “toughest dilemma” in his essay.
China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the push for a slowdown. A spokesperson called it “fear mongering” in remarks published Monday.
While Musk argues for self-regulation at the industry level, his own companies have fought state-level AI laws. SpaceX’s xAI unit sued California over its AI Training Data Transparency Act and sued Minnesota over a law banning so-called nudify apps.
SpaceX’s AI unit is also facing lawsuits and probes after its Grok image generator was used to create deepfake content, including images depicting child sexual abuse.
SpaceX shares closed down 3.15% on Tuesday.
