TLDR
- The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, allowing eligible institutions to settle tokenized assets in central bank money.
- Pontes connects distributed-ledger platforms with the Eurosystem’s existing TARGET payment infrastructure.
- The system gives tokenized bonds, funds and other assets an alternative to stablecoins and tokenized commercial bank deposits for settlement.
- The ECB plans to expand Pontes gradually, while its separate Appia initiative develops a broader tokenized-finance framework.
- The retail digital euro remains a separate project and is not part of the Pontes wholesale platform.
The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, a new platform designed to settle wholesale tokenized-asset transactions using central bank money. The system went live on September 21 as part of the Eurosystem’s broader push into tokenized financial markets.

Pontes links distributed-ledger technology platforms with the Eurosystem’s TARGET Services. It is aimed at eligible banks, financial institutions and market-infrastructure providers rather than consumers.
Pontes Connects Tokenized Markets to Central Bank Money
Tokenized securities such as bonds and funds still need a cash asset to complete settlement after a trade. Pontes gives institutions the option to settle that cash leg using central bank money rather than relying only on stablecoins or commercial-bank deposits.
The ECB says access to central bank money could help provide a trusted settlement asset as tokenized markets expand. The Eurosystem had previously tested DLT-based settlement in central bank money before moving ahead with the live system.
The platform will initially provide a limited set of services, with more participants and functions expected to be added gradually. Pontes is part of the Eurosystem’s strategy to keep central bank money at the center of European wholesale finance as more assets move onto distributed ledgers.
Tokenization involves representing financial assets as digital tokens, usually recorded on DLT networks. The ECB says the technology could improve efficiency by bringing issuance, trading, settlement, custody and servicing closer together while allowing more automation through smart contracts.
ECB Also Developing Appia
Pontes is being developed alongside Appia, the ECB’s longer-term initiative for Europe’s tokenized financial system. Appia is expected to produce a blueprint for a broader European tokenized-finance ecosystem by 2028.
The two projects have different roles. Pontes provides a practical settlement link between DLT platforms and central bank money, while Appia focuses on the longer-term architecture of tokenized wholesale markets.
The ECB also said Monday that it plans to invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenized securities. Those transactions will be settled through Pontes, giving the central bank direct experience with trading, settlement and portfolio management involving DLT-based assets.
Initial investments are expected to focus on euro-denominated public-sector and European supranational securities. Operational details and timing will be decided after preparatory work is completed.
Digital Euro Remains Separate
Pontes should not be confused with the ECB’s retail digital euro project. Pontes is designed for wholesale transactions between financial institutions, while the digital euro is being developed as a possible payment option for consumers and businesses.
The retail digital euro remains under development and would require its own legal and operational framework before any wider issuance. Pontes, by contrast, is already live as part of the Eurosystem’s wholesale settlement infrastructure.
The launch gives European financial institutions a new route for settling tokenized assets without depending solely on private digital-money alternatives. It also places central bank money directly inside Europe’s developing tokenized-finance infrastructure.
