TLDR
- Micron Technology (MU) stock fell 7% on Wednesday to a three-month low, even as the S&P 500 and Dow rallied.
- China’s CXMT said it is advancing a 4F² DRAM design, with a server-memory product planned by the end of 2026.
- Democrats won both chambers of Congress, and Rep. Yassamin Ansari called for a pause on advanced AI development.
- MU is down nearly 20% since early October and fell another 2.2% overnight.
- The next quarterly report is expected in December 2026.
Micron Technology (MU) stock dropped 7% on Wednesday and closed at its lowest level since early August. It was a rough day for a stock in a rising market.
Early in the session, MU traded at $837.16, down 2.1%. The slide only got deeper from there.
The S&P 500 closed up 1.58% at 7,688.62. The Dow gained 3.03%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.44%.
Micron missed the party. It slipped another 2.2% in overnight trading.
China’s Memory Challenger Steps Forward
ChangXin Memory Technologies, known as CXMT, announced progress on a 4F² DRAM architecture. The vertical cell design packs more memory into a smaller footprint than conventional chips.
China’s 🇨🇳 CXMT plans to start limited HBM3E production within two months despite yields of just 20%–30%, versus around 70% at SK Hynix.
The move reflects China’s shortage of advanced memory needed to scale domestic AI chip production.

The company’s president said a server-memory product based on the design is planned by the end of 2026. Investors worry that more Chinese DRAM supply could cut into Micron’s pricing power.
DRAM makes up roughly 73% of Micron’s revenue. That is why the CXMT news landed so hard.
The stock had bounced 3.3% in the prior session. That move was fueled by bullish memory pricing signals from Apple and SK Hynix, and most of it faded on Wednesday.
A Form 4 insider filing was also submitted on Wednesday. It added a minor note of uncertainty.
Washington Adds to the Pressure
Democrats won control of the House and Senate, their first full control of Congress since 2023. The party also flipped multiple governors’ offices.
Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari then called for a pause on advanced AI development. “Top of the Democratic agenda on day 1 needs to be a pause on advanced AI development, regulation of this out of control industry, and a ban on artificial superintelligence,” she posted on X.
Investors expect new rules could slow the buildout of data centers and limit AI computing capacity. Democratic campaigns have pushed data center operators to cover their own power and infrastructure costs.
SanDisk and SK Hynix extended their losses. Nvidia, Intel and AMD fell between 0.5% and 2% overnight.
CoreWeave, Nebius and Iren slid between 2% and 3.6%. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) is down 4.5% this week and fell 1.2% overnight.
Some analysts pushed back. Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman said that if the U.S. buildout slows, demand outside the U.S. is more than enough, and that forecasts remain intact.
Micron’s recent numbers are strong. It reported record fiscal Q4 2026 revenue and a gross margin of 86.8%, and management guided for a record fiscal 2027.
Even so, the stock has lost nearly 20% since early October. The next quarterly report is expected in December 2026.
