Google on Wednesday announced plans to invest at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in AI data centers in Finland, marking its largest single investment in Europe. GOOGL stock barely moved on the news, edging down 0.03% to $338.36.
The capital will be deployed through 2028, covering three brand new data center sites in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, along with an expansion of Google’s existing facility in Hamina.
Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, said the investment “underscores Google’s commitment to grow our presence responsibly, pairing the expansion of our technical infrastructure with new energy capacity, grid enhancements, and energy affordability initiatives.”

Finland has become a magnet for AI infrastructure investment, partly due to its available land and cleaner, cheaper power. Industry insiders have started calling the country the “Texas of Europe.”
“What we’re now seeing is weekly new inquiries for market entry into Finland from new players,” said Matti Lajunen, a partner at Finnish law firm Hannes Snellman.
Fortum Jumps 11% on 22-Year Power Deal
One of the bigger market moves from the announcement came from Finnish energy company Fortum, whose stock surged 11% after Google confirmed a 22-year life extension power purchase agreement with the firm.
Google also secured new wind power agreements and a 94-megawatt battery system to help balance grid demand across its Finnish operations.
Local grid operator Fingrid Oyj will connect the new sites to Finland’s national power grid. Fingrid CEO Asta Sihvonen-Punkka noted that placing the sites near strong grid points keeps power costs down.
Finnish telecom firm Elisa Oyj and network supplier Nokia Oyj will handle connectivity infrastructure for the new data centers. The facilities will also include heat recovery systems to redirect excess heat to local homes.
Jobs and Economy
The project is expected to support more than 37,000 jobs during the construction phase, including 16,000 direct building roles. Once operational, the facilities are estimated to support around 7,000 local jobs annually.
Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the deal, saying “deepening our collaboration with Google will deliver lasting benefits for both parties.” The country has been dealing with slow economic growth and high unemployment, making the investment a meaningful boost.
Google also said it would work with Fortum to explore new business models around potential new nuclear reactors at the Loviisa site in Southern Finland.
This investment fits into Alphabet’s broader capital spending push. In July 2026, Alphabet raised its full-year spending target to $205 billion, aimed at building out data center capacity faster than rivals.
Wall Street analysts currently rate GOOGL a Strong Buy, based on 24 Buy ratings and four Hold ratings over the past three months. The average price target sits at $426.04 per share, implying upside of about 26% from current levels.
