TLDR
- Critical Metals stock jumped about 27% in Monday premarket trading to roughly $8.55.
- The move followed a new U.S.-Denmark-Greenland security agreement that put Greenland-linked strategic assets back in focus.
- Critical Metals currently owns 92.5% of the Tanbreez rare earth project in Greenland.
- The company plans to reach 100% ownership if its European Lithium acquisition is completed.
- The rally remains speculative because the security pact does not provide direct funding, permits or purchase agreements to Critical Metals.
Critical Metals (CRML) stock jumped about 27% in Monday premarket trading to roughly $8.55 after closing the previous session near $6.73. The move came as traders rushed into Greenland-linked names following a new security agreement involving the U.S., Denmark and Greenland.
President Donald Trump described the agreement as giving the U.S. permanent control over Greenland’s security, while Danish and Greenlandic officials said sovereignty and self-determination remain intact. The full terms have not yet been published, and the pact is expected to be signed during the U.N. General Assembly.
That political development put Greenland’s strategic mineral resources back in focus. Critical Metals attracted particular attention because of its controlling interest in the Tanbreez rare earth project.
Other Greenland-linked stocks also moved sharply higher Monday. The moves suggest investors were reacting to the broader geopolitical news rather than a company-specific operating update from Critical Metals.
Tanbreez Rare Earth Project Moves Back Into Focus
Critical Metals completed the acquisition of an additional 50.5% interest in Tanbreez in April, increasing its ownership from 42% to 92.5%. European Lithium continues to hold the remaining 7.5%.
The company is also pursuing an acquisition of European Lithium. If that deal closes, Critical Metals expects to consolidate 100% ownership of Tanbreez.
Tanbreez is a heavy rare earth project in southern Greenland. Critical Metals has described it as one of the world’s largest known deposits of heavy rare earth elements.
Rare earths are used in electric motors, advanced electronics and defense equipment. That makes Greenland’s mineral resources closely tied to current U.S. concerns over supply chains and strategic competition.
Reuters reported that the new agreement is designed in part to prevent hostile powers from establishing military positions or making certain strategic investments in Greenland. Denmark has also said NATO will take a larger role in Arctic security.
Investor Excitement Comes With Risks
CRML’s technical picture had been mixed before Monday’s jump. Benzinga said the stock was above its 20-day and 50-day moving averages but remained below its 100-day and 200-day averages.
That makes Monday’s move a sharp short-term break rather than confirmation of a longer-term trend. The stock was also approaching resistance around $8.50 in premarket trading, according to the same source.
Investors should also separate the geopolitical story from Critical Metals’ actual project economics. The security agreement does not provide the company with direct U.S. financing, mining approvals, supply contracts or guaranteed customers.
Tanbreez also remains a development-stage asset. Its future value will depend on financing, permitting, construction, commodity pricing and the company’s ability to move the project toward production.
The proposed European Lithium transaction brings another layer of execution risk. The acquisition remains subject to conditions, including shareholder approval, and has not yet closed.
For Monday, the immediate catalyst is the Greenland security agreement and the attention it has brought to strategic mineral projects. Critical Metals’ latest confirmed ownership stands at 92.5% of Tanbreez, with full ownership dependent on completion of the European Lithium deal.
