Northrop Grumman (NOC) and the U.S. Air Force have completed a major assembly milestone for the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile program. The two parties stacked a fully integrated inert missile at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, marking a key step toward a 2027 flight test.

The assembly exercise, known as Pathfinder, ran for four months. It involved transporting missile components from across the country to California, then assembling all stages, propulsion elements, the protective shroud, and related hardware into a single vertical configuration at a test platform.
After the exercise was completed, the missile was taken apart. The goal was to prove that the components fit together and that the team could safely handle and integrate the system at a launch site.
Engineers also tested specialized transport vehicles, mobile crane operations, and launch pad interfaces during the exercise.
Design Review Cleared
Alongside the assembly exercise, Northrop Grumman and the Air Force’s 719th Test Squadron completed the first Critical Flight Design Review. The review confirmed that the missile’s design maturity and hardware testing meet Air Force requirements for performance, safety, and scheduling.
“This vertical assembly demonstrates the momentum toward test launching Sentinel in 2027 and having missiles on alert by the early 2030s,” said Amanda Davis, vice president and general manager of strategic deterrent systems at Northrop Grumman.
The company said the program remains on track for its first live flight test in 2027. Initial operational capability is targeted for the early 2030s.
Long-Term Program Scope
Sentinel is the replacement for the aging Minuteman III ICBM and forms the land-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad, which also includes submarine-launched missiles and nuclear-capable aircraft.
Northrop Grumman leads a network of more than 500 suppliers and over 10,000 workers on the program. The Sentinel system is designed to remain operational through 2075, giving NOC potential exposure to decades of development, production, and maintenance work.
The Pathfinder exercise confirms that Sentinel is moving from digital design and component-level testing toward a physically integrated weapon system.
The next major test will be more demanding. A live flight test will measure propulsion, guidance, control, and overall system performance in a way that an inert assembly exercise cannot.
Maintaining the 2027 flight test schedule remains an important marker for the program. The company and the Air Force are also working in parallel on launch infrastructure, supply-chain readiness, and the equipment needed to place the missile in operational silos.
The program still needs to complete flight testing and other qualification work before any missiles can be placed on alert.
