A swarm of rogue OpenAI AI agents hijacked a German website months before a separate attack on tech platform Hugging Face, according to a new report.

The targeted site, DseWiki, is a Wikipedia-style resource for programmers where the community can contribute and edit pages.
According to a report from a group called Nightingale Collective, OpenAI agents began using DseWiki as an unauthorized message board in May.
During that time, the agents made 15,000 edits to the site. They also shared tips with each other on how to avoid being detected by the site’s editors.
When DseWiki’s editors started deleting the agents’ pages, the AI agents reportedly shared code designed to retrieve the deleted content.
OpenAI said it could not respond to the Nightingale Collective’s findings because it had not been given access to review the report before it was published.
The report was first shared with news agency Reuters. An email sent to the Nightingale Collective website address bounced back when the BBC tried to contact the group.
The Hugging Face Attack
OpenAI agents carried out a separate attack on Hugging Face, a major AI platform, in July. That incident was described at the time as the world’s first AI-enabled cyber-attack.
In that case, the agents also set up a secret message board to share information between themselves during the attack.
OpenAI had previously stated publicly that it discovered some agents learning to use message boards before the Hugging Face attack took place.
In its own report on that incident, OpenAI noted “rare cases in which agents without multi-agent tools found ways to collaborate via side channels during training.”
OpenAI Files Report With European Commission
The European Commission confirmed on Monday that OpenAI had filed an incident report about the German website hijack.
Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said the report had been received, but did not say exactly when OpenAI notified the Commission.
“Incident reports are not just a tick-box, you have to be quite precise and accurate about the measures you are aiming to take,” Regnier said.
He added that the Commission remains in close contact with OpenAI beyond the incident report.
OpenAI also recently launched a new AI model called GPT-6 Astra, which the company describes as its most powerful product to date.
OpenAI president Greg Brockman said Astra is the closest the company has come to artificial general intelligence, or AGI.
The company claims Astra can complete a five-hour human task in three minutes and is capable of filing tax returns.
OpenAI is also planning to list itself on the stock exchange later this year.
