Musk first teased the rebooted Roadster back in November 2017, targeting production for 2020. That timeline came and went without a car. Now, nearly nine years later, Tesla is calling it ready for its second unveiling.
TSLA stock was trading at $358.33 in premarket on Tuesday, down 0.2%. The stock is down 20% year-to-date and 12% over the past 12 months.
On Monday, Musk appeared on the All-In Podcast alongside SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, but the Roadster got some notable airtime.
“Excitement guaranteed,” Musk said of the upcoming reveal.
Co-host Jason Calacanis, who says Musk showed him the car privately, was less restrained. “My mind went boom,” he said. “What he’s going to show on 10/1 is going to blow people’s minds.”
He added that early videos of the car might be so impressive that viewers won’t believe they’re real and not AI-generated.
What to Expect From the Roadster
Tesla has previously promised a 0-to-60-mph time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed above 250 mph, and up to 620 miles of range. Those specs alone would put it among the fastest production cars ever built.

Musk has also teased a SpaceX collaboration involving cold-gas thrusters, which could briefly lift the car off the ground. He called it “rocket-y stuff.” Exactly how that will work in practice remains unclear ahead of the reveal.
The car will be a convertible and carries an eye-watering price tag. Back in 2017, Tesla asked for a $50,000 deposit for the base model and $250,000 upfront for the Founders Series edition.
Reservation Holders Have Been Waiting a Long Time
Tesla began collecting deposits in 2017. On an October 2024 earnings call, Musk thanked the “long-suffering” deposit holders for their patience.
Not everyone held on. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee, known as MKBHD, have both confirmed they canceled their reservations. When Tesla posted the reveal date, Brownlee responded simply: “Well well well.”
Investors have largely been watching Tesla’s AI plays more closely than its car lineup. The company launched an AI-trained robo-taxi service in June 2025, though growth has been slow. Tesla is also developing humanoid robots under its Optimus program.
There is some speculation that Optimus could make an appearance at the October 1 event alongside the Roadster.
Tesla has not announced a firm production date or customer delivery timeline for the Roadster.
