Guterres Pushes Global AI Oversight
The UN chief said governments should develop conditions for the responsible pacing of AI and create safeguards capable of keeping up with increasingly powerful systems. His comments continue a years-long effort to establish international governance around the technology.
The UN created a 39-member AI advisory body in 2023, while the Security Council held its first formal discussion on AI risks the same year. Trump Takes Different Approach on AI
President Donald Trump offered a contrasting message during his own UN address. Trump has opposed broad new federal AI restrictions and argued that the U.S. should avoid slowing development as it competes globally in the technology.
