Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said on September 7 that Bitcoin is well-equipped to handle cybersecurity threats without relying on community-wide agreement to fix them.

His comments came in response to growing fears in crypto circles that artificial intelligence could pose a serious risk to Bitcoin, with some analysts warning of a price drop of more than 50% over the next two years.
Buterin disagreed. He said that network-layer threats can be dealt with through simple client and mining pool upgrades, no social consensus needed.
He described the probability of anyone cracking Bitcoin’s core cryptography, including its hashes and proof-of-work model, as “tiny.”
Bitcoin’s proof-of-work network has accumulated roughly 2^96 hashes over its lifetime. That level of computational weight makes a successful attack extremely difficult to carry out.
Bitcoin has also never suffered a successful 51% attack. That is the scenario where one entity gains majority control of mining power and can manipulate transactions.
The Difference Between Technical Threats and Consensus Problems
Buterin drew a clear line between two types of security challenges. Technical threats, he argued, can be fixed through code updates. Consensus problems, like governance disputes or contentious protocol upgrades, are a different matter.
For Bitcoin, Buterin believes the technical side is strong enough that the community does not need to rally together to stay safe.
In an essay published in May, he also looked at AI’s role in cybersecurity from both sides. He acknowledged that AI opens the door to more sophisticated attacks.
But he also pointed out that AI can be used to build stronger defenses. Formal verification tools, which mathematically prove that code is correct, can be applied to blockchain systems including consensus mechanisms.
Bitcoin uses elliptic-curve cryptography. It is considered strong against today’s computers, but could in theory be vulnerable to a powerful quantum computer in the future.
Current quantum systems are far from being able to threaten Bitcoin’s encryption. The crypto community is already researching post-quantum solutions as a precaution.
At the time of these comments, Bitcoin was trading near the $64,000 to $65,000 resistance range. Traders were watching closely for signs of a breakout or further consolidation.
Buterin’s comments offer reassurance to those concerned about Bitcoin’s long-term security outlook.
