TLDR
- Brian Armstrong says AI agents will eventually do more daily transactions than all humans combined
- Armstrong rejects the idea that crypto and AI are competing, calling them complementary technologies
- Coinbase is building “Agentic Finance” products using x402, Base, and USDC
- AI attracted 61% of global VC investment in 2025, with crypto deal counts at a five-year low
- Researchers have flagged security weaknesses in x402 systems, and the claims remain unproven predictions
Brian Armstrong made his position clear on July 27: crypto and AI are not rivals. In a post on X, the Coinbase CEO said AI agents will need their own financial infrastructure and that crypto is the natural fit.
"If you're in crypto, pivot to AI."
I used to hear versions of this, and it's the wrong way to think about the world. It's zero sum, scarcity thinking.
Crypto is a general purpose technology. It's infrastructure, the same way electricity or the internet is infrastructure. It…

AI Agents Need Their Own Payment Layer
Armstrong’s core argument is that AI agents cannot use traditional banking. They need to pay for data, software, computing power, and other services without human approval at every step.
He said blockchains and stablecoins offer fast, programmable, and global settlement. That makes them practical tools for machine-to-machine payments.
Armstrong coined the term “Agentic Finance,” or “AiFi,” to describe this model. He said Coinbase is already building for it.
The Coinbase CEO did not give a timeline for when agents would exceed human transaction counts. His focus was on frequency — software paying small amounts for every API call, data request, or computing task.
That model is different from how consumers spend money. Consumer payments tend to be fewer and larger.
How Coinbase Is Building for This
Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents in June. The tool connects AI systems to user accounts through a command-line interface, letting agents trade, monitor markets, and rebalance portfolios within set limits.
On July 23, Coinbase expanded the service with live market data and plain-language conditional commands. It also added x402 support for Coinbase Business, allowing companies to accept USDC payments from AI agents.
A new developer kit lets websites and API providers add x402 payment support with a small amount of code.
Coinbase also launched Agentic.market in April. It works as a marketplace where agents can find and pay for data, computing, and trading tools without a subscription or manual API key.
Armstrong said Coinbase pioneered this model through x402, Base, and USDC. The x402 protocol adapts an old HTTP payment response so a website can request payment during an interaction. Base handles low-cost settlement. USDC is the main payment asset.
Questions Remain
Armstrong’s prediction is not yet backed by data. A July research paper found that x402 transaction counts on Base were highly concentrated, and some payments were internal or easy to generate artificially, making them a weak measure of real adoption.
Separate July research tested 15 x402 facilitators and found rule violations in every system. Risks included unpaid services, asset theft, and gas abuse. Coinbase and other affected providers received the findings and made fixes. Both papers are still preprints.
Regulators are also watching. Bank of England Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden said in June that current rules do not account for autonomous agents.
Meanwhile, AI continues to pull investment away from crypto. OECD data shows AI companies attracted 61% of global VC funding in 2025, totaling nearly $259 billion. Crypto venture deal counts have fallen to a five-year low.
