According to the American Cancer Society, more than 680,000 Americans were living with a prior lung cancer diagnosis as of January 1, 2025. The National Cancer Institute estimates around 230,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2026.
For patients who finish treatment, a new pulmonary nodule on a scan can create real uncertainty. CT imaging can detect nodules but cannot always tell doctors whether it is cancer, a new tumor, or benign changes from treatment such as scarring or inflammation.
CyPath Lung gives a binary result: “unlikely” or “likely” malignancy. That could help physicians decide who needs further investigation and who can stay on routine monitoring.
Published studies put the recurrence rate for non-small cell lung cancer at between 20% and 55%, depending on stage and treatment type. The American Society of Clinical Oncology recommends surveillance imaging every six months for two years after curative-intent treatment of stage I to III NSCLC.
CyPath Lung’s Track Record
The test uses flow cytometry and proprietary AI to analyze cell populations in patient sputum. In a published clinical trial, it showed 92% sensitivity, 87% specificity, 88% accuracy, and a 99% negative predictive value in detecting early-stage lung cancer in high-risk patients.
BioAffinity said three years of commercial experience have shown the test can help doctors assess malignancy risk and guide patient decisions, including cases where imaging and predictive models produced conflicting results.
CEO Maria Zannes said the company believes surveillance after treatment “has the potential to lead to earlier intervention” and could work alongside early detection tools.
Oncologist Vijay Gunuganti, MD, of Texas Oncology said CyPath Lung “can provide additional information without immediately subjecting the patient to an invasive procedure.”
Chief Medical Officer Gordon Downie, MD, PhD, added that finishing treatment is “not the end of cancer care,” pointing to the growing importance of survivorship monitoring.
Volume and Analyst View
Trading volume on Tuesday hit more than 17 million, compared to a three-month daily average of about 5.91 million. That kind of volume spike usually reflects a fast-moving retail crowd responding to the news.
CyPath Lung is marketed as a Laboratory Developed Test and is not cleared as a standalone diagnostic tool. The clinical performance data cited relates to the detection setting and has not been separately validated for post-treatment surveillance.
AI analyst Spark rates BIAF as Underperform with a $5.50 price target, citing critical cash burn, deteriorating revenue, and a Nasdaq delisting threat as key risks.
