GoPro’s stock exploded on August 31 after Bloomberg reported that YouTuber Mark Fischbach, known online as Markiplier, had quietly built up an 8.5% stake in the company. That makes him GoPro’s largest individual shareholder.
GPRO ended the trading day up 46.01%, reaching 87 cents per share. After-hours trading pushed it even further, with the stock hitting $1.37, a gain of more than 128% combined on the day. By premarket the following morning, GPRO was up another 93%, trading above $1.69.
Those are price levels the stock hasn’t seen since early January.
$GPRO is not the next $GME and this is what X doesn’t know lol:
The catalyst:
Markiplier just disclosed 8.5% of GoPro (13.5M shares). Stock ripped 20%+ on huge volume. This does not help the company like Woodmans 20M loan.

The timing matters. In July, GoPro received a notice from Nasdaq warning that the stock had traded below $1 for 30 consecutive trading days. The company was given 180 days to get back above the $1 threshold or face delisting. The Markiplier news pushed it well clear of that line, at least for now.
Markiplier told Bloomberg he started buying after spotting what he thought was an undervalued stock. “I saw the stock and where it was, I was like, that seems undervalued,” he said. “It’s just something I’ve been cooking in the background; I want the company to succeed.”
What Drew Markiplier In
His interest in GoPro wasn’t purely financial. Markiplier used GoPro cameras to capture behind-the-scenes footage while making his indie horror film Iron Lung. The film, made on a $3 million budget after being rejected by major studios, went on to gross $51 million at the box office.
It was GoPro’s new cinema camera, the Mission 1 Pro ILS, that really caught his attention. “It blows my mind what it can do in such a small package,” he told Bloomberg. “They have a big future with this camera coming out opening up a new segment for them.”
Markiplier does not currently hold any position within the company.
A Stock Under Pressure
The enthusiasm around the stake disclosure is a sharp contrast to where GoPro actually stands as a business. Q2 2026 revenue came in at $105 million, down 31.3% year over year. The company sold 291,000 camera units in the quarter, a 38% drop from the same period a year earlier. Net loss for the quarter was $51 million.
GoPro has also cut its workforce by 23% this year. Management has flagged substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern.
Analysts are not buying the hype. The consensus rating on GPRO is “strong sell,” with an average price target of $0.50, roughly 43% below where the stock was trading before the surge.
Over the past five years, GPRO had lost more than 91% of its value heading into Monday’s session. Even after the 46% single-day gain on August 31, the stock was still down more than 37% for 2026 heading into the close.
GoPro has faced growing competition from Insta360, DJI, and smartphone cameras, all of which have eaten into its core market.
