The license plan
The price move followed Lighter’s third-quarter investor call on October 21. Reports from the call said the exchange intends to apply for a US license in November.
Founder Vladimir Novakovski has said the team spent roughly a year talking with regulators. His goal is to make Lighter the first on-chain perpetuals exchange to get approval from the CFTC.
Reports did not say which type of license Lighter will seek beyond the CFTC derivatives filing, or what a Robinhood arrangement would look like. Lighter had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
Lighter is a decentralized exchange built around perpetual futures. These contracts never expire, so traders can hold a leveraged position on an asset’s price indefinitely.
Robinhood and token burns
Robinhood Chain launched on July 1, 2026, and integrated Lighter for perpetual trading. The deal uses a 50/50 revenue split on trades.

Millions of dollars in volume have already moved through the partnership. Lighter set aside 11 million LIT for incentives, and activity through Robinhood Wallet earns double points.
Lighter is run by Elliot Technologies, a Delaware company. It raised $68 million at a $1.5 billion valuation in November 2025, with Robinhood Ventures among the backers.
In a June 30 update, Lighter said it had used exchange revenue to buy about 15.5 million LIT. That was roughly 6.3% of the circulating supply at the time. The team said it would burn the tokens by sending them to an Ethereum burn address.
Lighter has also added binary options on BTC and ETH. Perpetual futures open interest was about $500 million over the past 24 hours.
Over the prior seven days, LIT traded between $2.83 and $3.87. The next update depends on whether the CFTC filing lands in November as planned.
