TLDR
- China’s industry ministry has asked ByteDance, Alibaba and other firms to report demand for Nvidia’s new RTX Pro 5500 chip.
- The ministry has reportedly told some companies it intends to approve the purchases, though timing and quotas remain unclear.
- ByteDance is said to be considering an order of around 1 million units, subject to Beijing’s approval and Nvidia’s supply.
- Nvidia plans to ship roughly 500,000 chips per quarter to China starting in late December, with orders due by September 30.
- Analysts hold a Strong Buy consensus on NVDA, with price targets implying 44% upside from current levels.
China is reportedly weighing whether to let some of its biggest tech companies buy Nvidia’s newest chip. The Information reported that Alibaba and ByteDance are among the firms being asked to report their purchase plans.
The chip in question is the RTX Pro 5500, which launched earlier this month. It was built for high-end professional computing rather than AI training, but that hasn’t stopped Chinese firms from eyeing it for exactly that purpose.
🔥BULLISH: China could OPEN THE DOOR for billion-dollar tech giants to BUY $NVDA’s newest high-end chip, per The Information.
ByteDance, valued at $550 BILLION, and Alibaba, worth $268 BILLION, are among the firms that could soon get APPROVAL to buy Nvidia’s new chip.

One prospective buyer is reportedly looking at pairing eight of the chips per server to run larger AI models. That workaround has become common as export rules limit access to Nvidia’s most powerful data-center hardware.
China’s Ministry Signals Approval
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently asked companies including ByteDance and Alibaba how many chips they’d want and what they’d use them for. According to people familiar with the matter, the ministry has told some firms it plans to approve the purchases.
What isn’t clear yet is when approvals will land or how many chips each company will actually be allowed to buy. Reuters said it could not independently verify the report.
ByteDance’s number is the eye-catcher here. The company is said to be considering an order of around 1 million RTX Pro 5500 units, though that figure could shift depending on both Beijing’s quota and Nvidia’s ability to supply.
Nvidia is targeting shipments of about 500,000 chips per quarter to China, starting in late December. The company has asked customers to lock in orders by September 30 to secure supply.
Pricing for the chip in China sits around 85,000 to 90,000 yuan, or roughly $13,000. That puts it in the same range as Huawei’s Ascend 950PR, a domestic AI chip that’s become a go-to alternative.
A Chance to Claw Back Market Share
This report lands at a pivotal moment for Nvidia in China. CEO Jensen Huang has said U.S. export controls have pushed the company’s share of China’s advanced AI chip market from around 95% down to zero.
The numbers back that up. H200 sales to Chinese customers made up less than 1% of Nvidia’s data-center revenue in the quarter ended July 26.
Huawei and other domestic players have stepped into that gap. Even so, Chinese firms are still short on computing capacity, and Huawei itself has said it’s struggling to keep pace with demand.
If China approves the purchases and the RTX Pro 5500 clears U.S. export rules, it could hand Nvidia a fresh foothold in a market it’s largely been locked out of. Nvidia, for its part, pointed to outdated U.S. restrictions and China’s own import limits as the real obstacles.
On TipRanks, NVDA carries a Strong Buy consensus rating built on 31 unanimous Buy calls. The average price target of $324.32 implies 44% upside from current levels, and the stock is up nearly 21% year-to-date.
