TLDR
- Robinhood Chain stopped producing blocks for over 14 minutes on Sept. 4, stalling all transactions
- The outage affected around 8,400 expected block intervals at the chain’s normal 100ms block speed
- Robinhood has not explained the cause or published a recovery timeline
- Robinhood stock fell as much as 5.1% during Friday’s session before partially recovering
- L2BEAT ranks Robinhood Chain below Stage 0, its lowest decentralization tier, with $2.46 billion in assets on the chain
Robinhood Chain, the company’s Ethereum layer-2 network, stopped producing blocks for more than 14 minutes on Friday. The outage left token transfers and smart contract transactions stalled with no confirmation.

The halt began at around 12:57 p.m. UTC on Sept. 4. Users could still submit transactions, but the network could not process them while block production was paused.
At its normal speed of one block every 100 milliseconds, a 14-minute stop represents roughly 8,400 missed block intervals.
What Caused the Outage
Robinhood has not disclosed what caused the halt. The company’s main status page did not list any incident for the chain during the outage.

Block explorers were the only public source showing whether the network was running. Robinhood runs no dedicated status page for the chain.
The chain runs on a single sequencer built using Arbitrum’s Nitro software. When that sequencer stops, there is no backup. Users cannot force their transactions through another route.
L2BEAT, which tracks layer-2 decentralization, rates Robinhood Chain below Stage 0, its lowest tier. The tracker flags the single-sequencer design, instant contract upgrades, and only two whitelisted actors able to dispute invalid states.
Impact on Transactions and Users
No reports indicated that balances were lost during the interruption. Transactions submitted during the outage stayed pending until block production returned.
The outage hit blockchain users hard. Without new blocks, traders could not complete swaps, move collateral, repay loans, or interact with smart contracts.
Traffic had been heavy before the halt. Blockscout recorded 14.14 million transactions in the 24 hours prior, at an average fee of $0.48.
The outage did not affect Robinhood’s standard brokerage platform. Customers with U.S. stocks, ETFs, and options in regular accounts were not impacted.
Before the outage, Robinhood Chain had recorded about $945 million in daily DEX volume on Aug. 25. Cumulative DEX volume had topped $47 billion since the July 1 mainnet launch.
HOOD Stock Falls Then Recovers
Robinhood stock opened Friday at $120.48 after closing at $124.72 on Thursday. Shares dropped as low as $118.30, a fall of around 5.1% from the prior close.
The stock later climbed back to around $122.81, cutting the daily loss to about 1.5%.
Available data did not confirm the chain outage caused the stock decline. Robinhood shares had already been trading near $120 in premarket before reports of the outage surfaced.
Thursday had seen a 16.6% rally in the stock, driven by analyst upgrades and product expansion news.
L2BEAT currently values assets on Robinhood Chain at $2.46 billion. The chain ranked fifth among tracked networks by 30-day DEX volume as of recent data, behind Solana, BNB Chain, Ethereum, and Base.
