TLDR
- European stocks pushed modestly higher Wednesday, with the Stoxx Europe 600 up 0.11%
- Brent crude fell 2.6% to $86.32, extending a 5% drop from the prior session on hopes of a US-Iran ceasefire
- ECB’s Isabel Schnabel warned further rate hikes are needed to bring inflation back to target
- Markets held a cautious tone ahead of Nvidia’s second-quarter earnings after the US close
- European tech suppliers like ASML, STMicroelectronics, and Infineon watched closely for AI demand signals
European equity markets edged up on Wednesday, staying near one-week highs. A sharp drop in oil prices gave traders some relief, but caution dominated as investors waited on two big events: an ECB rate warning and Nvidia’s earnings.

Oil Drop Lifts Mood as Iran Talks Progress
Brent crude fell 2.6% to $86.32 a barrel, building on a 5% drop from the day before. The slide came after reports suggested the US and Iran were close to an interim ceasefire deal. The agreement would include guarantees for open commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran and Oman both confirmed they had resumed talks aimed at fully reopening the key shipping route. That eased fears about oil supply disruptions and helped push energy-linked market sentiment upward.
London’s FTSE 100 lagged behind its European peers. The index is heavy on energy stocks, which fell as crude prices dropped.
Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 both drifted sideways on the day. Euro Stoxx 50 and Stoxx 600 futures were up around 0.1% in premarket trading.
ECB’s Schnabel Signals More Rate Hikes Ahead
ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel spoke to Bloomberg News on Wednesday. She said that at current interest rates, inflation is unlikely to return to the 2% target over the medium term.
Schnabel said further tightening will be necessary. Her comments pointed to a possible 25-basis-point rate hike at the ECB’s September meeting, in line with what money markets were already pricing in.
She also flagged that the ongoing Middle East conflict, combined with a resilient euro-area economy, continues to push inflation risks to the upside.
Nvidia Earnings in Focus for European Tech Names
Beyond oil and rates, the biggest event of the day was Nvidia’s second-quarter earnings report, due after the US market close. Nvidia is seen as a key gauge of global demand for artificial intelligence hardware.
For European markets, the stakes are real. Companies like ASML, STMicroelectronics, and Infineon Technologies all supply into the AI chip ecosystem. A strong Nvidia result tends to support their order books and stock prices.
No major European economic data or corporate earnings were scheduled for Wednesday. That left the Nvidia report as the main potential market mover for the session.
Traders were also watching for the US PCE inflation reading, which could give more clues on Federal Reserve policy direction going into the final months of 2026.
