The United States military struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, marking the first known US attack on Iran in over a month.

US Central Command said its forces took “limited, precise action” against minelaying forces that posed an “imminent threat” to shipping in the strait.
Captain Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command, said Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the waterway.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed two people were killed and two injured in the strike. The IRGC vowed “response and punishment.”

Hours later, Iran fired ballistic missiles at US military bases in Jordan, targeting King Hussein and al-Azraq air bases. Jordan’s army said it intercepted eight missiles early Monday morning.
Iran’s state TV also reported that the Iranian army targeted an air base in the UAE with drones. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence denied the report, though it confirmed shooting down one drone.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters
Larak Island sits directly on the Strait of Hormuz, just offshore from the key port of Bandar Abbas. Before the conflict began, roughly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the waterway.
Iran has been stopping tankers and reportedly demanding payments of $2 million per vessel to cross the strait.
Last week, US forces finished clearing Iranian mines from shipping routes in the strait. Trump had warned that any ship deploying new mines would be destroyed.
Diplomatic and Economic Pressure
The US strike came as the Trump administration has been pursuing an economic strategy against Iran rather than sustained military action.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent promised an “economic onslaught” against Iran and its trading partners, including China, which buys around 90% of Iranian oil.
A fresh US sanctions campaign was announced on August 24, aimed at further isolating Tehran and expanding secondary sanctions.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday that resuming diplomacy with the US “isn’t impossible,” following what he called “creative discussions” with Qatar.
However, Araghchi added that progress depends on the US accepting that “pressure doesn’t work.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a statement: “We are not seeking war, but we will deliver a decisive response to the aggressors.”
The US is also maintaining a naval blockade of Iran. On Saturday, Central Command said it had disabled three vessels, boarded two, and redirected 82 ships as part of the blockade.
The conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran has now passed its six-month mark, beginning with coordinated strikes on February 28.
